Accidentally Saved Over a File? How to Get the Previous Version Back

Overwriting is a different problem from deleting. When you save over a file, the new version takes the old one’s place on disk — so ordinary undelete tools, which look for deleted entries, often can’t help. Here’s what actually works, in order of likelihood.

Step 1 — Check the app’s own history

Before anything else: many programs keep their own backups. Microsoft Office has AutoRecover and a Version History panel (especially if the file lives in OneDrive or SharePoint). Google Docs and other cloud editors keep full version history. Check there first — it’s the cleanest fix.

Step 2 — “Restore previous versions” (Windows)

Right-click the file (or its folder) and choose Restore previous versions. This works only if Windows had a restore point or File History covering that file — many PCs don’t have it switched on, so it’s hit or miss, but it costs nothing to check.
